A single word can be a powerful thing. That’s why several years ago I chose one word to focus on and grow in. I gave up setting goals at the beginning of the year, or those goals that I probably wouldn’t be able to really accomplish and focused on one word that I could be intentional with and work on that year. In the past, one word choices have been: diligence, trust, and hope. All wonderful words and each were chosen at a perfect season for things I was going through at that time.
I believe in choosing one word and focusing on it for 365 days. By doing this, it changes my perspective, my thoughts, and actions. With the new year just right around the corner, literally within a few days, it’s time to share my One Little Word for 2018. Kindness.
Why such a simple word you ask? Such a simple word, yet our world needs SO much of it. I cannot expect my children to be kind to others if they do not seeing kindness from me. I shouldn’t expect others to be kind to me if I’m not showing kindness to them. It’s a simple word that could have such a huge impact if we all did our part. Sure, we can all say we are kind, but there are instances when things rub us the wrong way or we don’t like how something happened or how someone said something to us. That’s where kindness comes into this. If we responded to these types of situations in kindness and love, what type of relationships would we have with those who are so different from us? What type of world would we have? What type of example would we be setting to our children? It’s one of mine and my husbands biggest goals as parents to make sure our children know true kindness (what that looks like and living it out) when they leave home someday.
I’m backing this word for 2018 with this verse –
“Be kind and compassionate to one another.” –Ephesians 4:32.
This word and verse will be placed throughout different places where everyday I’ll see and remember to act on this one word. I’ll write it on my bathroom mirror. I’ll place this adorable print above my desk. I’ll wear a shirt with just my one little word for 2018 on it. I’ll write it on my planner pages and in my gratitude journal.
Just one word for 2018.

Then we would make great friends 😉 Happy New Year!
I really like this idea and hope it catches on with many more people. Not only does t seem like a great character building opportunity and technique, but it’s easier to be able to commit to this on a daily basis rather than a lot of resolutions and goals people may set for themselves. I love your word for the year as well as words you’ve focused on in the past few years.
Thanks so much! Happy New Year!
Kindness is always a good word. I’m excited to see how you work this into your daily routine for 2018! I bet you’ll notice quite a bit of change in your life after making this a life focus.
It’s always been a life focus for our family, but we really want to take it to the next level. Such an important thing for kids (and all of us really) to make sure we are doing.
What a wonderful Idea. I have a number of goals for this year, but my main theme for the year is growth.
Such a great word for 2018 for you! Love it! Thanks for sharing!
I don’t pick a word for the year but I always love hearing the words that other people pick. I think kindness might be the best one I’ve heard of yet!
Thanks so much! Happy New Year!
Kindness is a wonderful thing to focus on!
Happy New Year!
Happy New Year! My word for this year is agape, to be open to all possibilities. To love selflessly and be of service to others
