I’ve noticed with our boys that positive reinforcement works a whole lot better than using negative words.
I created these charts to accomplish just that. {and I included a bible verse that I think every toddler/preschooler/school age child should learn. Heck, even us adults need to be reminded of it. -Philippians 2:14 and it’s a good verse to go with your Scripture Memorization.}
Everytime I notice one {or both} of them doing something that is pleasing, sharing, caring for eachother or someone else, obeying the first time I ask, they get to place a sticker on their chart. Once they fill up an entire row with stickers, they get a special treat. This treat might include a special outing with mom or dad, a little toy from the dollar section at Target, they might get to pick {within reason} where we go for lunch or dinner that weekend. Something exciting to them.
My 5 year old is almost out of this “chart stage”, this will probably be the last chart he fills up {sad that he’s growing up so fast}. I’ve found this works best for ages 2-4.
So, instead of getting all mad at them when they don’t obey, I try to focus on uplifting them and being positive when I notice them doing something kind and it works TREMENDOUSLY!
Try it – you don’t have to be an artist {obviously I’m not one at all} to make a chart. It can be as basic or as cute as you’d like it.

I used charts for a long time. We also filled a jar with marbles. When the jar was full, we did something special. Although I believe in disciplining disobedience, it is important to comment on the positive actions of our kids. Reminds me of the Blessings Chart from Doorposts.
