Townsend / Great Smokies KOA {review}

It’s that time of year when we’re in full camping mode. We try to go at least once a month if not more. We love to visit state parks, but have especially taken a liking to Townsend / Great Smokies KOA. We’ve been to this campground many times and we leave saying it’s one of our favorites!

We just camped there last week for 4 nights and had a great time {as usual}. One of the premier campgrounds in the Smoky Mountains of Tennessee, the Townsend / Great Smokies KOA is surrounded by the mountains and beautiful forests. Nestled up against the Little River, this campground provides a great setting for relaxing, putting your feet up and enjoying nature after a hard day of hiking or shopping.

All of the campsites have picnic tables and campfire rings. Alot have paved patios, too. For great camping try the full hookup level grassy sites. They have free cable TV (which we normally don’t use because when we go camping, we want to be as “screen free” as we can), and 30 or 50 amp service. The water/electric and tent camping site areas range from semi-sunny to heavily wooded and secluded. It’s beautiful!

Our favorite spots at this campground are along the river. We always book in advance enough so we can be sure to get one of these sites. Sites #121-123 are our favorites. We stayed at 121 this past trip, but have stayed on all three sites and love them all the same.

Additional amenities include a laundry, swimming pool, two very clean bathhouses, a modern playground for the little people, a covered pavilion equipped with a large barbecue pit, horseshoe pits, a basketball court, wireless internet, bicycle rentals and an arcade.

The bathhouses are so incredibly clean. This is a HUGE thing when you’re talking about campgrounds. Like, very nice!

  Outdoor recreational opportunities are plenty. The beautiful 5-mile long Townsend Bike Trail begins and ends just across the road from our campground. The campground borders the Little River, which flows out of the National Park. The river is excellent for swimming or tubing and is well known for great trout fishing. The Tennessee Wildlife Resource Association stocks the river from the 1,650 feet of river frontage every two weeks during the summer. Tubes are available for rent through the Welcome Center.
