Stock tank pools. I love seeing something so country be a hip new thing. I first saw this idea on Pinterest a few years back and thought it would be a great addition to our back yard. We live in the middle of the woods and our yard doesn’t allow for a big in ground pool because of all the trees (it would take a ton of work to bring all the trees down and put a pool in), so we opted to try a stock tank pool last year and we are SO glad we did.
The first thing we did after picking the stock tank pool up from Tractor Supply was fill it with water to make sure we didn’t have any leaks. We were lucky to find a store that had one in stock on our way back from our trip out west last year (right in the early stages of when Covid hit) and we snagged the last one at a Tractor Supply in Kentucky on our way back home from Wyoming.
We cleared out a space in our yard with our tractor and leveled it. While the boys worked on leveling the ground and adding railroad ties around the perimeter of the area, the girls painted the exterior of the pool. We went with a white exterior paint from Home Depot. It took 2 coats of the paint and turned out great! I didn’t paint the inside because I knew it would chip easily in there with the water and pool toys from the kids.
We went to a nursery near our house that has gravel and got a medium size gravel to go under the pool. We didn’t want the rocks to be too big or else it wouldn’t be comfortable on our feet while we were swimming. I also added a few pavers to make a little walkway around the pool.
After the pool was put into place, we drilled the holes that we needed on the side of the pool and connected the pump. The pumps at the time weren’t so expensive (there’s a huge demand for them this year), so we didn’t spend what they’re going for now, but we have had zero issues with this pump and love it. Then, we filled the pool up with water and also added in the 3 tabs of chlorine in the little chlorine floater that stays in the pool. We let it run for several hours before we let everyone jump in. The pool is treated like a real pool, meaning we use chlorine tablets, filters, pumps, and shock.
We LOVE our little 9 foot stock tank pool. Absolutely love it and used it all summer long last year and plan to do so again this year. What a fun, little, weekend project. I know your family will love having one, too.
