We have so much to be thankful for. During the holidays we always seem to scurry around trying to find the best thing to buy our friends & family. This holiday season, consider giving someone a gift that will bless others.
My friend, Matt Chambers from SafeWorld has an amazing campaign going on. SafeWorld is opening a medical facility in Uganda! {Ya’ll know my personal love for the country, and I couldn’t be more excited to give to this great cause!}
So, what exactly this means to you?
“In 2013, we completed construction on the first building of a brand new medical park in Bulyaake Parish, Uganda. In 2014, we want to open the doors on the first in-patient facility this area has ever seen. Our staff will be the best Uganda medical professionals we can find, and this parish will finally have the access to quality, affordable healthcare they so desperately need.”
Why Build A Hospital?
“In the United States, we have 1 physician for every 390 people. In Nakaseke District, Uganda (where SafeWorld is based), there is only 1 physician for ever 29,000 people. As we researched the most immediate, effective, community-building ways we could help, this seemed the most crucial need. When we met with all the village, parish, and district leaders, they were unanimous that this should be the first building we construct. Out of all the options, it is the most complicated, but we’re committed to the very end! Affordable access to excellent healthcare changes EVERYTHING.
Our immediate impact area is home to more than 10,000 people, but the surrounding district has a population of nearly 300,000. Our hope and goal is that providing the best possible healthcare through both national and foreign medical professionals, the surrounding clinics and hospitals will either 1) step up their level of coverage, or 2) simply stop providing substandard care and close their doors to make way for more quality clinics as we expand.”
YOU could have a part of this! If 1,000 people give $50, the goal will be met. Instead of buying another gift card or pair of winter gloves {or some item we really don’t need} to someone on your list, why not instead give them a donation to this facility in their name?
More About SafeWorld:
- Began in 2008
- Focuses on community health and education
- Committed to hiring primarily indigenous staff
- Flagship project is medical park currently under construction in the 8 villages which make up the Bulyaake Parish in Central Uganda
- In process of helping Bulyaake Parish to become the first parish to have clean water sources in all associated villages
- So far, 6 of the 8 villages have water sources and have gone through village-wide hygiene and sanitation training
- Shipped 300,000+ pounds of relief supplies, funded 9 medical relief trips to Haiti after the 2010 earthquake
- Small US operations to keep overhead as low as possible (only 1 full time staffer)
The Joy to the SafeWorld campaign is about bringing hope and generosity during the time of year we celebrate giving the most. Our goal with the SafeWorld medical clinic is to provide safe, affordable healthcare to tens of thousands of people who currently live 7-10 mile walk away from the closest hospital. Even after walking so far, the hospital often won’t have what the patient needs most. In fact, women in labor have to bring all their own medical supplies for delivery of they will be turned away. When we open our doors, all of that will change. At the SafeWorld clinic, anyone can show up anytime and our Ugandan medical staff will be ready. This Christmas, we’re doing something in Bulyaake Parish, Uganda that’s never been done. Join us.
